Cast: Alberto Momo, Giulietta De Bernardi, Teresa, Caterina and Tommaso Momo, Andrea Mantelli, Nathan and Francesco Cappennani, Eugenio Maderna, Mariella Navale, Giulia Nejrotti.
Italy 2012, 120', minidv, colour, v.o. Italian sub. English

The children in the film are Salgari’s pirates today in the countryside of Piedmont, inside, outside and alongside daily life. In parallel and together there are adults, with their existences and problems. The children are brothers/sisters/cousins and friends who love each other and quarrel. They provide the starting point for the film and a journey through childhood, to the sound of songs by pirate musicians and singers. Emilio Salgari is present, but in centre stage is Alberto, who works on films with his computer. All of his characters can be seen in modern-day Turin. Salgari is yesterday and the film is today. The past is always present.
“A nod to one of several routes through life, and this time they are all more closely tied to the land, among the many lives that are not seen here”. (Tonino De Bernardi)

Cast: Emma Parrini, Davide Guasti, Giovanni Martorana, Carlo Monni, Stefano Sarri
Italy 2012, 90´, dvcam, colour, v.o. Italian sub. English
Produced by: Quarto Film, in collaboration with Fuori Orario / Rai Tre, with support of Toscana Film Commission
A film in which cannibals are imagined emerging from the Caribbean and Salgari’s fantasy world. They are envisaged by following the wanderings of adolescents from a village in the Tuscan Apennines. Johnny Depp does not appear in this pirate film, but it does feature David Bowie as The Man Who Fell to Earth. The Dark Wood comes in the form of news bulletins with live reports of deaths. Real pirates are shipwrecked on the coast of Venezuela. They must exist and they genuinely do: they are real actors waiting for a director who has not arrived. The true adventure is life, which must be envisaged.
“Davide told me he was a pirate. Emma said that Johnny Depp was playing a pirate. Emma also talked about a film that striked her, The man who fell to earth with David Bowie. I told her to write him a letter”. (Giovanni Cioni)

Le tigri di Mompracem
Director: Ugo Gregoretti
Italy 1974, 83´, Betacam, color, v.o. Italian
Cast: Gigi Proietti, Carlo Hinterman and Tony Di Mitri
Produced by: Rai Radio Televisione Italiana
With his quintessential audacity and originality, Gregoretti decided to juxtapose Salgari’s prose with the most mundane everyday stories taken from ‘La Nuova Arena’, a Verona newspaper in which the serial novel was published in 1883. The result is a blend of current affairs, news, politics and adventures in instalments that is surprisingly reminiscent of the very latest experimental films. The staging, costumes and colour photography are all highly refined.
“Gigi is Sandokan, complete with a turban, and gives an extraordinary example of his mimicking skills, trying to follow the writer’s instructions, who, every other sentence, forces his main character into unreasonable mood swings, into cries that have nothing human, into macho expression”. One of the best things ever made on TV”. (Carlo Hinterman)
Copy provided by Teche Rai
Ugo Gregoretti (Roma, Italy, 1930), a writer and director of tv and radio programs (from Le tigri di Mompracem to Il conte di Montecristo), he made his debut as film-maker with I nuovi angeli (1962). The following year he made Omicron and the episode Il pollo ruspante, in Ro.Go.Pa.G. 1969 is the year of Apollon. In 1977 he makes Le uova fatali, while in 1989 he directs Maggio musicale. In 2011, with Citto Maselli, Carlo Lizzani and Nino Russo, presents at Venice Film Festival, Scosse. Beyond directing, he also write screenplays and has played as actor in films like C'eravamo tanto amati, Domani accadrà, Il comune senso del pudore, Un povero ricco, La terrazza.
